Director for Christian Education and Youth Ministry Position Description
for Christ Church United Church of Christ
Goal: The position of the Director for Christian Education and Youth Minister will serve the many needs of the Christ Church's children and young people by:
- Faith building: Providing opportunities in which they can deepen their Christian faith and broaden their knowledge and experience with faith communities.
- Discipleship: Providing opportunities in which they can become more fully involved in the life of the church family; thereby enhancing, enriching, and encouraging their experiences for significant Christian service.
- Community building and mission: Providing opportunities that invite their participation in wholesome recreation and related activities both within the church and in the community.
Requirements: The candidate must possess the following attributes:
- Strong Christian commitment and commitment to ministry in the church and willingness to serve a United Church of Christ congregation.
- Significant background and/or degree in a related field including education, lay ministry, or biblical studies. Seminary training is preferred but not required.
- Ability to organize, energize, and inspire a diverse community of adults with responsibility for youth ministry.
- Ability to develop and articulate a long term vision for youth ministries for our church
- Ability to provide and make available a wide variety of resources to enhance and strengthen our youth ministries.
- Willingness to work cooperatively with Pastor and other staff in serving the church.
- Commitment to children and youth and a strong desire to minister to their personal and faith development needs.
- Experience in children's and/or youth ministries or related fields required.
- Willingness to undergo state police background check and child abuse clearance.
Responsibilities: The following duties and responsibilities are to be performed in cooperation with the Pastor and the Board of Christian Education.
Christian Education:
- Coordinate the Church's Sunday School program, including administrative duties, replenishing classroom supplies as needed, as well as appointing and assisting the Sunday School Classroom teachers with maintaining their duties.
- Research and select a curriculum for the Sunday School program in cooperation with the Board of Christian Education, using all available resources.
- Develop and maintain a process designed to enlist teachers for Sunday School, providing them with appropriate training in lesson planning, and substitute teachers as needed.
- Maintain healthy communication with both teachers and parents involved in the Sunday School program through all modern forms of communication.
Youth Ministry:
- Research and participate in local, national and global missions.
- Develop and implement a youth ministry program that provides faith based activities for young people focusing separately on middle school and high school youth.
- Research youth ministry opportunities using all available resources, including those offered through other UCC churches in the Pennsylvania Southeastern Conference.
- Encourage young members to participate in Pennsylvania Southeastern Conference camps, local, and national youth events.
Worship Participation:
- Coordinate with Pastor to conduct at least two Youth Sunday worship services each year.
- Meet on an as needed basis with the Director of Music Ministry to assist in coordinating youth participation in worship, such as annual Christmas pageant, choir performance, and other music related events.
Administrative Duties:
- Prepare annual operating budgets for both the Youth Ministry and Christian Education programs and submit to the Board of Christian Education for review and inclusion in the Christ Church's UCC annual budget.
- Attend monthly Board of Christian Education as scheduled and present a report on the status of the Youth Ministry and Christian Education programs.
- Coordinate an annual Vacation Bible School program in the summer.
- Facilitate Christ Church's Safe Place Policy, assuring that all aspects of the policy concerning children and youth are conducted as directed by that policy.
This is a part-time position.
Pay is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
