2/15/10.... Confused about the meaning of “Nunc Dimittis?”
The Latin phrase, which appeared in the February 14 Worship bulletin, had folks wondering about the translation and meaning. Very briefly, we found the following:
Nunc dimittis (nŭngk dimit'is) [Lat.,= now you are dismissing], the opening words of Simeon's song of praise on the occasion of the presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple. After seeing Jesus, Simeon joyfully proclaims that he has seen God's salvation. The hymn is used traditionally in evening liturgical services.
Nunc Dimittis (THE CANTICLE OF SIMEON), found in St. Luke's Gospel 2:29-32
“Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel.”
